Chapter 14: Ugly Santa Figurines and Snowmobiles

Tristan was whistling as he put on the coffee. He felt ten years younger—light and free. Maybe he should see if he could find the box with Christmas decorations. He believed he still had some—if Paul hadn’t taken them all. He hadn’t been up for it any other year, but with the TV showing one Christmas feature after the other, he did miss seeing stars in the windows, Christmassy curtains, and ugly Santa figurines littering the place.

Paul had loved putting up Christmas ornaments—probably still did. For the first time since Tristan had walked out of their house with Paul running after him, his dick still glistening from having been pulled out of some twink’s mouth, screaming that it wasn’t what it looked like, Tristan wanted to decorate. Maybe he’d even go out and chop down a Christmas tree; it was his forest, after all.

Chuckling, he tried to picture Aiden going with him into the deep forest and picking out a tree they would decorate together. They could take the snowmobile, bring a thermos with something hot to drink, and Tristan could show him his land.

Og picked up on his mood and came carrying an old stump of thick rope, threads hanging out at both ends. Tristan snickered but indulged in a little tug of war. Og was starting to get old. Tristan had bought him right before everything had gone to hell. But old or not, he still gave Tristan a good match, putting all his weight behind the pulls.

“Do you think the roads are open?”

And just like that, the weight that had been lifted from Tristan’s shoulders slammed back down on him with such force it made him stumble. Og took it as a small victory and pulled even harder. Tristan let go of the rope and looked at Aiden.

He looked nervous, wouldn’t meet his eyes, and fidgeted with the hem of his—Tristan’s—jumper.

“Maybe. I guess we could ride up to your car and see.”

The colour drained from Aiden’s face. Even his lips went pale. “I…erm…I guess, if you want to.” Want to? Tristan sure as hell didn’t want to.

“We probably should go see that it isn’t blocking the road.” He was proud of the tone of indifference.

“Yeah, probably should. I’ll put on my clothes.”

Tristan watched Aiden pack his things together. He poured a cup of coffee and sipped on it. He didn’t feel any desire for coffee anymore, but he needed something to do, something to stop himself from saying anything stupid. You didn’t fuck a guy and then ask him to move in. You didn’t. And Tristan had done the living-together thing before; he knew how it would end. Once he’d killed Aiden’s exuberance with his boring self, the fights would start, then the late nights of not knowing where he was, followed by walking in on him making love to some stranger in their bed. Tristan couldn’t go through it again. It had nearly killed him the first time around. It
